Introducing our April course「四月コースの紹介」

This is an introduction to a one-month intensive woodworking workshop held in April 2026.
2026年4月に開催された１カ月集中木工教室の紹介をします。

Two people participated this time. Although they were beginners at woodworking, they were able to complete the course successfully.
今回参加してくれたのは２名。木工初心者でしたが、無事に修了することが出来ました。

On this page, I'd like to introduce what we did in the April course.
このページでは、４月コースで行った事を紹介していきたいと思います。

Week1　Basic technique practice　基本技術の練習

Sharpening a blade　刃物研ぎ

Master carpenters are meticulous about sharpening their tools. This is because a well-sharpened tool contributes to doing a good job.
宮大工は刃物研ぎに拘ります。それは刃物を綺麗に研ぐ事は良い仕事をする事に繋がるからです。

Sharpening blades is difficult. However, the ability to sharpen the blade to a perfectly smooth edge cultivates the delicate feel needed when working with wood.
刃物研ぎは難しいです。しかし、刃先を一点の曇りなく研ぐ感覚は木材を加工する上での微妙な感覚を養います

There are easy ways to sharpen knives, but those aren’t true skills. Things that are easy to learn have limited applicability. That’s why I deliberately teach more difficult sharpening methods. 簡単に研ぐ方法はありますが、それは技術ではない。簡単に覚えれるものは応用が少ない。だから、あえて難しい方法での研ぎを教えます。

We gave a lecture on sharpening thin chisels using natural whetstones.

How to use a saw　鋸の使い方

Carpentry tools are learned in the order of saw, chisel, and plane.
大工道具は鋸・鑿・鉋の順番で覚えていきます。

Those who are skilled with a plane are also skilled with a chisel. Those who are skilled with a chisel are also skilled with a saw.
鉋の上手な人は鑿が上手です。鑿が上手な人は、鋸が上手です。

Mastering the use of a saw is crucial when working with wood. However, this technique is very mundane and tedious.
木材を加工する上で鋸を極める事は重要な事です。しかし、この技術は非常に地味で面倒です。

Taking the extra step is crucial for doing a good job. It’s quite difficult, but when you try making a joint, you’ll understand the importance of sawing technique. 良い仕事をするためには、一手間が大切です。結構難しいですが、継ぎ手を作ってみると鋸の技術の大切さが分かります。

How to use a chisel　鑿の使い方

There are two drills to help you learn how to use a chisel.
鑿の使い方を習得する上で２つのドリルがあります。

Aigaki (Half-Lap) Drill: Master the basics of paring with a chisel
相欠ドリル：鑿を使った削り方の基本を習得します

Anahori (Mortising) Drill: Master the basics of striking with a chisel.
穴彫りドリル：鑿を使った基本的な打撃技術を習得します

The two drills mentioned above are fundamental to creating wood joints.
上記２つのドリルは、木材の継ぎ手を作る上で非常に基本的な要素をもっています。

If you master these two drills, you will be able to make most wood joints. この２つのドリルを習得できれば、ほとんどの木材の継ぎ手を作る事が可能です。 This technique is very painstaking, but you’ll understand why it’s worthwhile in the second week. この技術は非常に根気がいる作業ですが２週目に、これをやる意味が分かります。

Koshikake-ari-tsugi (Dovetail Lap Joint)　腰掛け蟻継ぎ

Once you've mastered the basic techniques, let's try making a joint.
基本技術を習得したら、継ぎ手を作ってみましょう。

The lap joint is one of the basic joints. This joint can be made with just a saw and a chisel. 腰掛蟻継ぎは、基本的な継ぎ手の一つです。この継ぎ手は、鋸と鑿があれば作る事が可能です。

Don't be afraid of failing. It's okay to fail, so just try. That's how you learn.
失敗する事に恐れてはいけません。失敗しても良いので挑戦してみましょう。それが学びです。

This is an application of the basic techniques we've learned so far. If you understand the processing steps and have a few tips, you can make it well.
今までやってきた基本技術の応用です。加工手順を理解し少しのコツがあれば上手に作る事が出来ます

shachi-sen-tsugi 車知栓継ぎ

Living in a shared house　シェアハウスでの生活

There is a shared house located about a 5-minute walk from the training center.
研修場から徒歩５分程度の場所にシェアハウスがあります。

Students in the one-month intensive course will spend the month in this shared house.
１カ月集中コースの生徒達は、このシェアハウスで１カ月を過ごします。

Shinji, who served as the interpreter for the April course, also stayed in the shared house with us and provided support for the students’ daily lives.

四月コースの通訳を担当してくれたシンジも一緒にシェアハウスで過ごし、生徒達の生活面でのサポートも行ってくれました
